10 Best Things to Eat on the Granite Belt

Working in the Cellar Door at Ballandean every day, we hear about the adventures of guests to the region and of course the conversation always turns to food. So we have decided to put together our list of the 10 best things to eat on your next visit. This list is in no particular order but this is the food we hear about the most. APPLE PIE - at Suttons Farm Everyone loves to eat these pies for the best afternoon tea ever. The pies are huge and every pie is made from 22 delicious apples grown right on the farm. ICE CREAM BURGERS - at The Bramble Patch These are legendary in the area and definitely a must try when in region. It is a warmed chocolate muffin cut in half and filled with delicious raspberry sorbet and vanilla ice cream and covered in Berry Coulis. Yumm! MUSHROOM and TRUFFLE SOUP - at the Barrelroom at Ballandean Estate. This restaurant has certainly gained a huge reputation since opening in 2010 winning numerous State Restaurant and Caterers Awards. What does rain do to a vineyard and the winemaking process?

Well, that has been the question on guests lips for the past few weeks, maybe it is the nervousness of the cellar door staff or the cranky glances from the winemaking team, but we all seem to know that too much rain is not a good thing! Vintage 2017 will go down as a "wet one" but all in all, we have definately seen worse before so we are still hopeful that we will be producing some great wines this year. So what does the rain do? Essentially, the rain will drop the Baume' or sugar levels of the fruit therefore making it a little tricky in the winery to produce big and robust wines. It can also cause disease outbreaks (moulds and mildews) but thankfully, we have only had a minimal amount of disease this year. On the positive side however, we have some great flavours out there in the vineyard and the winemaking team are confident that with some careful nurturing, those flavours will be the saviour for Vintage 2017. Ballandean Estate’s award-winning single vineyard premium Shiraz is sourced from the Opera Block’s oldest vines, planted in 1968, some of the oldest in Australia. Winemaker Dylan Rhymer has delivered a delicate balance of fruit and French oak in the 2015 vintage. This Shiraz is an eloquent demonstration of the Granite Belt’s terroir, boasting ripe berry and cassis aromas. On the palate, intense blackcurrant, light pepper and spices combine with medium tannins for palate structure and a smooth, lingering finish.
